03 / A SHORT FICTIONAL CASE · 2 minute read

The wrong person.

A file is missing from Nora’s office. Leo says he saw a coworker leave with it.

“I saw Maya come out. She had something flat under her arm.”

Leo

OFFICE DOOR / 9:09:34–9:09:40

The door opens at 9:09:34 and closes six seconds later.

STOCKROOM RECORD / 9:09:29–9:09:47

An unbroken recording shows Maya at the stockroom packing table throughout the interval. All recordings use the same synchronized clock.

LEO’S POSITION

A corridor camera shows Leo at the stockroom doorway during the office-door event. From there, he has a clear view of the office exit.

Which part of Leo’s account can still be true?

Separate the account

SEPARATE THE TWO CLAIMS

The event may survive.
The identification does not.

Maya’s uninterrupted recording rules her out. Leo’s position still makes it possible that he saw someone leave the office.

You cannot keep the name Maya in his account. Whether he deliberately substituted her name or misidentified the person remains a further question.
