04 / A SHORT FICTIONAL CASE · 2 minute read

The Counterweight.

Victor Senn dies when a suspended scenic bridge drops during a solo walk-through at the Arden Crown Theatre.

“I pulled the release. I was angry. Then I heard the bridge fall.”

Tess

Tess’s admission appears to connect her action to Victor’s death. You ask to see which part of the rigging her lever controls.

Read the inspection

RIGGING INSPECTION

Tess’s lever releases an unloaded auxiliary line. It has no mechanical connection to Victor’s bridge.

The bridge has its own locking mechanism and automated cue. The inspection finds that both were altered.

What does Tess’s admission explain?

TWO DIFFERENT MECHANISMS

Her lever cannot move his bridge.

Tess’s admission explains an action on the auxiliary line. It does not explain the bridge falling.

The fatal mechanism lies in the bridge’s own system. The inspection separates those causal paths; it does not, on its own, identify who altered that system.
